1970s EPI
The Epicure One - where it all started.

These are the "brown booklet" speakers, from the early 1970s. There were two slightly different brown booklets - one featured the M201, and the other, the M201A.

Note that some of these models are sometimes seen badged as "Epicure".
No one knows why.

(Note: Here is how to remove the grills from these models)

Late 1980s Epicure

This line of speakers featured angle-sided cabinets, and finally broke with the concave dome tweeter tradition. They are very nice speakers, but bear little in common with the "classic" EPI designs. Even more radically, their model numbering scheme runs in the opposite direction!

New owners were instructed to oil their cabinets before listening.

Microtower

The Microtower speakers were made in the mid-1970s, and three were tall, thin columns with bottom vents, intended to be relatively omnidirectional. The fourth one shares parts with them and not much more.

Some were marked EPI and some Epicure. I suspect that some were not in walnut vinyl, such as hip, painted finishes.

Time/Energy

The Time/Energy models constituted a major revamp of the EPI product line for the 1980s. Gone was the wonderful concave dome tweeter. The woofer and midrange cones were made of Lexan, with the foam from the surround extended and laminated behind them. Despite these changes, a lot of the models continued to echo earlier products.

Magnus, CD, and HE

I call these lines the "West Coast" speakers, for two reasons. One is that their design is a complete departure from the classic East Coast EPI heritage, and the other is that most of the people buying parts for them are in California. They tend towards big, loud, vented three-way designs.

"CD" stands for "Constant Dispersion", and "HE" for "High Energy". "Magnus" means "big".

Series 3

These speakers from the early 1990s were made by Harman International after they acquired the brand. Like most inexpensive speakers made by this time, they were decent-sounding.

The inexpensive parts were probably made by JBL, another Harman property.
