Building speakers based on classic designs:
HUMAN C2
(back to kit/legacy projects)

If you're going to bother using a center channel speaker in a Home Theater system, it should be a very good one, and complement the quality of your main speakers, as well.

The HUMAN C2 is just such a speaker. Using two of my hand built woofers and one aluminum concave dome tweeter, it has great power handling, frequency response, and clarity. The drivers are sheilded to minimise video interference. I build the box to act as a TV stand, wide and deep and strong, but you can make it any shape that works for your setup.

The crossover used in the HUMAN C2 is just a single high quality film type ten microfarad capacitor in series with the tweeter. The woofers are wired in series with each other.

Stock bracing: I use a "shelf" type brace, although in this box it is vertical rather than horizontal. It is a board that resembles the front baffle, though with bigger holes cut in it. It is placed about 1/3 of the way from the front of the speaker. This increases rigidity tremendously, reducing panel resonances and making the speaker an even better TV stand.

Driver position: The tweeter is centered horizontally, and slightly above the center vertically, in the front panel. The woofers are centered vertically on each side of the tweeter, as close to it as is practical.
