The diameter is a nominal figure. It refers to the measurement from one edge of the speaker basket to the other. The nominal figure is often slightly smaller than the actual measurement - for instance a lot of 8" speakers are about 8 1/4" in diameter. On speakers with wide metal outer flanges or "squared off" basket trim, this nominal diameter will be slightly larger than the outside dimension of the foam or cloth surround.
